How do you take apart a plastic model horse without breaking it?

By · Comments (3)

I have tried soaking it in hot water to melt the glue but that doesn’t seem to be the problem. It is attached inside with little plastic prongs. I want to get it apart to re-hair it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you everyone for your great answers!

I hate to tell you this but the little plastic prongs are most likely glued with a plastic glue and they are now the strongest part of the model. There are ways to disassemble it but it will mess up the re hair part of the project.
Here’s what I would do. If you can get to the prongs you can cut them and then separate the parts. When you’re ready to reassemble lightly sand the area where the prongs where and reglue. It wont be quite as strong but it will hold. If when the prongs are cut they can’t be reglued you could add additional plastic strips on each half and glue to that. Wrap the model in some tape to hold when you reglue. Good luck and I hope this helps.

How do you break a green broke horse?

By · Comments (10)
Saturday, November 19th, 2011

My friend recently purchased a green broke appy. She’s 6 yrs old and is known to buck people off. What training would help her?

If I ever take in a horse who is known to buck, I always do lots of lounging work as opposed to riding work. I really like to pin point the cause of the behavior first…but if the bucking is really consistent I will dummy them. Meaning, I will put a weighted dummy on their back, secure it there and continue my lounge lesson. Each time the horse bucks, they work a little harder and this method has worked really well for me. BUT if this is a really constant thing, I always take into consideration that it might be a discomfort reaction. First I would double check the saddle, try some bare back ideas and as a last resort I would consider having my chiropractor come out and check the horse over.

And, if you dont know how to fix this issue and have limited experience with a horse/problem like this, just as a previous poster mentioned, definatley consider consulting a professional who CAN fix this. You just dont want to, un-knowingly, create more or a bigger problem through inexperience.

Good Luck – and please, be careful!

Anyone out there have A dead broke cheep horse for sale?

My family is getting an exchange student, and she loves horses. Our horses are either green or barrel horses, and we want her to be as safe as possible. So we would really love to suprise her with a broke horse that is on the cheeper side, so she has something to ride for the ten months she is here, and once she leaves my brothers girlfriend, can use. So let me know if you have a dead broke cheep horse for sale near shasta county, in California. THANKS!!!!

Contact your humane societies, they’re aware of any larger livestock that may need help, from abandoned livestock, abuse cases, or whatever. They can put you in touch with someone if there’s a horse on their list.

Also contacting any farm vets would be a good call, they’d be in the phone book.

How much can a horse be trained in 1 month?

By · Comments (11)

I have fallen in love with a 5 year old gelding that came from a PMU farm. : ( He was not handled, but since being rescued he is comfortable around people. Can be bathed, groomed, and lifts his feet. He is being sent to a trainer for 1 month to be trained to ride and then will be available for adoption. What can be accomplished in 1 month? I am an intermediate rider and owned horses for years, but have never had experience with a green broke horse so I am not sure what kind of progress to expect.

Depends on the horse and the trainer. At 30 days my reining mare had a very nice turn on her and was giving nice to leg seat and bridle. By 60 days she was doing everything at the walk and trot by 4 months she was stopping 25 feet and by 8 months was being shown in reining and at 13 months was wining $$ in NRHA derbies. Which is very very fast for a reiner.

So it all depends on many factors. However if the horse is ridden everyday by a good trainer and puts a solid foundation on the horse it should be doing prity good. I would not expect it to be loping but for some reason trainers think they need to get them loping before they even have a good trot down.

Best way to mouth a horse when breaking in.?

Hi Everyone,

What is the best way to mouth a horse? How long should it take? What methods do people use?

Cheers Sandi
By mouthing a horse i mean teaching an unbroken horse to respond to having the bit in its mouth
Thanks Louise, Yes I love working with young horses, and when they start to respond to what you are teaching them it is such a buzz.

when bitting a youngster start by making sure you have a nice soft and gentle bit, I like either a french link snaffle or happy mouth do a straight bar flexible bit that is nice and soft and flexible. I then dip it in something like molasses as this encourages the youngster to mouth the bit when they take it and it tastes nice for them. Then simply put the bit up against the teeth and encourage the horse to open his mouth with a finger on the bar and then gently slide the bit in. Go and leave the horse with it in for five minutes so he can get used to the idea then remove and leave it at that for now.

As for teaching them to respond to bit aids before you ride you should have been doing ground work including lungeing so that the horse understands verbal commands for walk, trot, stop etc. This way when you start long reining of the bit you can use the verbal commands and also introduce the corresponding bit aids at the same time and the horse will learn what they mean by that.

Good luck with your youngster – they are so much fun to work with.

How old of a horse is too old to start training for roping ?

By · Comments (1)
Saturday, November 12th, 2011

I ain’t a very experienced rider.
So i ain’t looking for a young green broke horse. All of the ones i’ve looked at and asked others about say that i should get an older horse that is already completely broke.

So now it all comes down the the question of how old is too old to start a horse training for roping.
i found a 8 year old, im just wondering if that’s too old.

An 8 year old is not to old, I would not be afraid to start one roping up to 12+ years old. As long as he is sound and solid. Have fun.
